Latest from Pikes Peak David Donner Will Continue His Family’s Rich Tradition During The 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Monday, Feb. 25 2013

Colorado Springs, February 20——-The Donner family is a big part of the legacy and history of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, starting with Bob Donner, Jr.’s triumph in 1960 in the Sports Cars division, driving a Porsche RSK.

In fact, the Donner family- Robert, Robert, Jr., Robert III and David, has chalked up eight wins in various divisions on Pikes Peak over the last 53 years, including David’s win in the Unlimited division last summer with a clocking of 10:04.652 in his Palatov D4PPS. It was his first appearance on the Peak since his father died in 2010.

David will be back on June 30, but this time switching to the Time Attack division and driving a 2008 Porsche GT3 coupe, updated to 2012 specifications for his attack on Pikes Peak –America’s Mountain.

‘This gives me the opportunity to run 2-3 other road races using the same car,” says Donner, who lives in Colorado Springs. So, this means that this Porsche won’t be a one-race auto, and we are looking at places like Long Beach and Austin as well the SCCA World Challenge Pro Series. I won’t have to make that many changes to get that done.”

Donner’s background on Pikes Peak includes the four overall wins, (three Open Wheel crowns and last year’s Unlimited title), numerous qualifying records and top three race finishes. He also has an extensive background in road racing including the 24 Hours of Daytona and Petite Le Mans.

“You have drivers from every form of motorsport, every manufacturer, they have all done it and it’s great to be a part of this truly remarkable event. My grandfather helped revive it after World War II, my dad won it three times in a Porsche, and my late brother Bobby won it in 1989. This event has so much personal meaning it’s difficult to state. Of course now it’s different with pavement, however that adds even more challenge.” says Donner.

Donner will have his hands full in the Time Attack division, which includes veteran Paul Dallenbach behind the wheel of the Rhys Millen’s Hyundai Genesis Coupe that set the all-time speed record on the Peak last year with a sizzling 9:46.164.

Also in the field of 21 drivers is 2010 Time Attack 2WD champion Jeff Zwart, who also has five Peak titles in other divisions,  2008 Time Attack 4WD winner David Kern, and Brazilian rookie Marthyn Goncalves, a veteran rally drive in South American racing.
