Spencer Penrose (1865-1939)

A Philadelphia born, Harvard Educated, mining and milling pioneer of Colorado and Utah who devoted his adult life to developing and promoting the Pikes Peak Region as a prominent sports and vacation area. In 1915 Penrose and his associates built the Pikes Peak Automobile Highway.  Penrose founded the Pikes Peak National Hill Climbing Contest in 1916 and devoted two magnificent Penrose Trophies.  Among his legacies to Colorado are The Broadmoor Hotel, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Will Rogers Shrine and the El Pomar Foundation.
