Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - Historic Race Results (A work in progress!!)
To better serve our long standing tradition, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is compiling race results from our first "Race to the Clouds" in 1916. Click through to PDF''s of results and galleries of historic photos.
1916
Open Wheel
This division began in 1916 and continues every year. Originally called Championship Cars, later Dune Buggies, Uprights, Sprinters and Indy Cars the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb deemed them the "Open Wheel" division. This description stands today.
Many of the drivers drove in two events, Roy Stentz, entered all three events.
WorldWar I interrupted the "Race to the Clouds" but local interest produced a restart on Labor Day in 1920. As economic times worsened, interest declined. By 1928, the Labor Day Race attracted only six Open Wheel entries and three Stock Cars.
Labor Day was set as Race Day and remained so until 1958.
Noel Bullock showed up at Pike''s Peak in his Ford Special with a 179ci, OHV, 50hp engine. Noel was practically laughed off the hill when he showed up at the 1922 event with a home built car. Because the car looked so poor, people called it the "Tin Lizzy." Noel surprised everyone by winning the race despite little practice and no time trial run. He even hand painted the #24 at the start when another racer commented that he needed a number. Noel Bullock shocked everyone with a 19:50.9 winning finish.
Glen Shultz set a record in 1923 in an Essex. By 1925 he had the big powerful 115hp Vertical 8 Stutz with a dual overhead cam DV-32 that pumped out a 156hp.
From 1925 to 1936, Shultz, Edward Phillips, and Louie Unser collectively took 9 wins and 4 records with those cars.
1928
The world wide great depression impacted the participants for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Only six Open Wheel entries were available in 1930. As the economy improved, so did the participants.
By 1937 there were 21 entered in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.Racing head conversions for the Model A engines used predominately previously, allowed the newly modified engines to now be contenders with the right driver and chassis package. Ford V-8 engines were used and the Miller engine allowed Louis Unser to power through to a record breaking run up the hill in 1939.
There is much controversy over whether or not an official race took place or not. For the record books, there was no race. 1940 The Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb Association became the sponsor in 1940. Although World War II was raging in Europe and Asia, two Frenchmen brought two beautifully styled Talbot Specials and entered the 1941 Race to the Clouds. 1942-1945 World War II. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb was not run.
